The industrial inventory base is over 7,000,000 square feet, with a vacancy rate of 3.5%.
Santa Maria Retail has a vacancy rate of about 7%, with strip rental at $1.35 per square foot. Lease rates on new retail pads are at about $4 per square foot. Shopping Center-sized land parcels now exceed $10.00 per square foot.
Throughout the Santa Maria Valley there are numerous parcels available for commercial and industrial use. Excellent commercial parcels are located on high traffic volume streets and the industrial parcels are in developed, permit ready, industrial parks.

Santa Maria Airport Business Park
The Santa Maria Airport Business Park is a proposed 40- to 50-year development project of the Santa Maria Public Airport District. The project proposes to utilize approximately 740.0 acres of the total 2,526 acres within the existing boundary of the Santa Maria Public Airport. The Santa Maria Airport Business Park will combine light industrial, research, manufacturing, and commercial type land uses around an 18-hole golf course. Additional uses will include retail opportunities, government facilities and subsidized housing. Large areas of open space are being reserved for recreational or conservation uses, and a portion of the project area is set aside as a biological preserve.
Shopping Centers
Santa Maria has the best of both worlds for
shoppers. The city's historic civic center
and downtown area abound with specialty shops,
antique malls and service-oriented businesses.
Over twenty retail developments are sprinkled
throughout the city, providing services,
shops and restaurants for convenient access
to all residents. Santa Maria is also home to the Town Center Mall, a regional shopping center boasting over fifty retail stores including Macy's, Gottschalk's, Sears, and Mervyn's. J.C. Penny Shopping Center and the newly built The Common’s Shopping Center featuring Kohl's Department store adds to the shopping choices Santa Maria has to offer. New shopping sites and restaurants are springing up all over Santa Maria as well.
Also to be found in Santa Maria are retail chains such as Target, Wal-Mart, Kohl's, Office Depot, Home Depot, Best Buy, Costco, Circuit City, J.C. Penny and Staples.
